As a young professional, the fastest way to learn the ins-and-outs of communications and government relations is to draw inspiration from some of the field’s most successful leaders. It just so happens I’m interning for one of the best, so I decided to reach out to Dan Hill, founder and CEO of Hill Impact, to learn about the firm’s story and his creative approach to reshaping the industry.
After more than 20 years using communications strategies and tactics to advise domestic and global businesses, Dan realized it was time to look at the field with a fresh perspective and introduce an innovative approach. “Most organizations experience dysfunctionalities when using both communications and government relations as two separate functions,” said Dan. “Nowadays, we have a highly political climate where people are polarized, therefore it’s necessary to consider political issues when developing crisis communication strategies and vice versa.”
Like any other innovator, Dan experienced challenges, especially when it came to convincing the industry of his approach’s worth. Clients, however, quickly warmed up to the new concept when they began to see winning results that positively impacted their bottom line. “We get it, we are different,” said Dan. “If we keep being leaders at this, eventually people will start to recognize the effectiveness of using this approach.”
